Changes to the ERIC database

Answer

Update 5/1/25:

As shared on LinkedIn by a co-director at the National Center on Educational Outcomes, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has stated that ERIC will continue to be supported, though with a "more refined scope" that "does include cost efficiencies, such as closing our helpdesk and exploring new models for meeting community member needs."

Original Post:

Due to funding cancellations at the Department of Education, ERIC (Education Resources Information Center), a key research database for education and related fields, has likely ceased being updated as of April 23, 2025.

Very little information about this change has been shared with the public. As we learn more, we will update this FAQ.

How does this impact you?

  • The database may remain available but not be updated with new content.
  • Access to current content may degrade because it will no longer be maintained.

What other resources are available?

  • EdArXiv, an open access preprint server, is a source to find newly published articles.
  • Web of Science is a large citation and abstract database that includes the Social Sciences Citation Index.
  • Google Scholar and Academic Search Premier are both broad, multidisciplinary databases that include content from the field of education.
  • JSTOR contains a large collection of scholarly journals and books from all disciplines.

If you have questions or need assistance using alternative resources, please contact Talia Nadir or Shannon Merillat, our Research and Instruction Librarians for the Social Sciences.
