Ebooks from Internet Archive

Answer

The Internet Archive’s Open Library contains millions of ebooks that are both in-copyright and out-of-copyright (i.e., in the public domain). Works in the public domain can be viewed online or downloaded for an unlimited period of time. Copyrighted works are available to borrow for either a 1-hour or 14-day loan, but you must first create and sign in with a free account. Downloadable ebooks are readable in Adobe Digital Editions and some other software applications.

Why are some ebooks listed as "Borrow Unavailable"?

More than 500,000 books have been taken out of lending as a result of Hachette v. Internet Archive, a court case brought by publishers against Internet Archive. The ebook records are still in the database, and people with print disabilities can still request to read them.

For additional background, please see Internet Archive's help post about the removed books.
